Unlike nearly any of the inspiring books I have read, you come to understand what you might expect on the path of the mystic. In that respect, the book might be compared to “Play of Consciousness” by Swami Muktananda—although the story itself is quite different. But the comparison is apt; you learn about the bliss alongside the hard part of the ecstatic experience. Thus, the book may be helpful for seriously dedicated spiritual practitioners as they seek to understand their own feelings and what they are going through--the jubilation of emerging into an alternate reality, one where transcendent delight and insight are mixed with threats to a sense of normality, one where the ego revolts in pain and ultimately adjusts to a bright new reality.

A remarkable title and this book is true to it. This is a fascinating account of the astounding spiritual experiences and transformative processes central to the author's life, Maetreyii Ma Nolan.
The mystic poet Kabir wrote that when one seeks the Divine, the intensity of the longing propels one. What Kabir said of himself is certainly true of Maetreyii Ma: “Look at me, and you will see a slave of that intensity.” Even though she describes doubts and fears along the way, the force that moved through her would not allow her to turn back.
Her extraordinary spiritual search led her, in her college years, to explore expanded states of awareness through drugs, leading to a “psychedelic awakening.”
As was the case for many “hippies” of that era, her drug experiences led to an interest in meditation and Eastern spirituality. Though she spent time with various teachers, most of the book is centered on her relationship with her primary Guru, Shri Anandamurti (Prabhat Ranjan Sarkar), in his outer form and as her inner guide.
This book's most enlightening aspect is Maetreyii Ma’s account of her psycho-physical-spiritual transformation. She often went into long-lasting states of bliss and emptiness. She experienced this process, changing her psychological structure and even her body’s cells.
I would have liked to read more about how her spiritual changes carried into her relationships and everyday life. She had two marriages, two children, and a career as a psychotherapist, but they are only mentioned in passing.
Maetreyii Ma does describe how after her Guru’s death, she “began to experience the descent of the Divine towards the earth rather than the rise of kundalini shakti towards the Divine.” This signaled a movement toward the incarnation of her realization in everyday life.
Near the end of the book, she proclaims, “I realize that this world I once considered mundane is… the vibrant expression of divine existence, manifesting as the light and shadows of creation.” Eddie Graham
